Dickinson State University (DSU) is set to host its 10th annual trading event, recently renamed the Blue Paperclip Challenge. This initiative, initially part of Dr. Deborah Dragseth’s Honors Business Ethics class, started in 2015. Drawing inspiration from Kyle MacDonald’s famous barter experiment, where a red paperclip was eventually traded for a house, DSU students engage in six trades, learning negotiation and trading skills.
This year marks a significant milestone with the event rebranded to reflect DSU’s colors. “When I first launched the challenge, I had no idea it would grow into such a cherished tradition,” said Dr. Dragseth, who holds the title of Baker Boy Professor of Leadership. She expressed excitement about the event's ongoing impact.
The current director of the program, Michelle Orton, leads the challenge. Orton emphasized the event's role in enhancing student communication skills, stating, “I believe the best way to help students step out of their comfort zones is by providing opportunities that will enhance their communication skills.” Orton noted the event’s contribution to the Business Ethics and Critical Thinking class over the last decade, thanks to Dr. Dragseth’s efforts.
Following the trading challenge, students will participate in a silent auction on April 22, 2025, at the DSU Heritage Foundation House. They will auction the items acquired in their final trades, with proceeds supporting the Amen Food Pantry.
