Dickinson State University (DSU), in collaboration with the Theodore Roosevelt Center, hosted National History Day on March 18. The event featured area secondary students participating in the North Dakota Western Regional Contest under the theme "Rights and Responsibilities in History."
The program emphasizes critical skills such as reading, thinking, research, and analysis. Students work individually or in groups across five categories: documentary, paper, exhibit, performance, or website. They compete in junior (grades 6-8) or senior (grades 9-12) divisions.
More than 30 students presented projects at the DSU Student Center. Of these participants, 17 were selected to advance to the state contest on April 16 at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. First and second-place winners will qualify for the national contest at the University of Maryland, College Park, in June.
Participants prepared projects on various historical topics including abolition movements, World War II, women's suffrage, and Title IX.
The following students are advancing to the state contest:
From Dickinson High School:
- Alexys Deschamps and Katy Schlecht with “Dark Science: The Medical Backstory of WW2 and the Ethics of Today.”
- Lucas Ward with “Your Right to Revolt.”
From Scranton Public Schools:
- Bentley Bergstrom and Porter Hofland with “Eminent Domain.”
- Palmer Mack, Sawyer Weber, and Tessla Stevenson with “Her Voice Her Vote.”

“This is the third consecutive year that Dickinson State University has hosted the National History Day in North Dakota Western Regional Contest," said Dr. Jeff Wells from DSU. "We look forward to working with our partners to continue to grow this event."
Support came from various organizations including DSU's Theodore Roosevelt Center. Students from DSU’s Alpha Lambda Pi chapter also volunteered at the event.
“The Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University is a proud supporter of National History Day,” stated Dr. William J. Hansard from TRC.
