Dr. Elizabeth Freedman Fowler has been appointed as the Dean of the School of Applied Sciences, marking a new chapter in her career. With a background in paleontology and education, Dr. Fowler brings a wealth of experience to her new role.

Reflecting on her appointment, Dr. Fowler expressed enthusiasm: "I am excited to lead this School and foster connections between students and faculty." Her professional journey began with dinosaur digs during her undergraduate years at Franklin and Marshall College, followed by earning a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from Montana State University – Bozeman.

Dr. Fowler's passion for science was evident early on: "I have always loved animals, with a special focus on dinosaurs." She takes pride in mentoring students who pursue graduate studies and careers in their fields.

As Dean, Dr. Fowler aims to create a sense of community among students and faculty while updating course requirements to better align with career goals. She also plans to introduce more flexibility into degree pathways.

Collaborations are key to Dr. Fowler's vision, particularly between biology and nursing programs for anatomy lab updates, as well as modernizing computer science courses.

To encourage interdisciplinary work, the School will integrate Agriculture and Technical Studies under its umbrella, fostering collaboration among various clubs and academic disciplines.

Engagement with students is also important for Dr. Fowler: "During the renovations of the Agriculture building...students in all of our programs are sharing the student study room." Upcoming events include hosting MathCounts and Science Olympiad competitions for middle and high school students.

Inspired by her mother, a science teacher, Dr. Fowler advises aspiring professionals to explore diverse classes and internships that build their resumes: "Do what you find interesting."

Dr. Fowler looks forward to working with DSU’s faculty, staff, and students: "We’ve got some great faculty, staff, and students here at DSU."

In conclusion, she welcomes everyone back for the spring semester: "Welcome students; your faculty are happy to see you this spring!"
