Dickinson State University junior Carl Askins has received a grant from the North Dakota Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (ND EPSCoR) for his undergraduate research project. ND EPSCoR aims to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in North Dakota by supporting both K-12 education and higher education research.

Askins, who is pursuing a chemistry major on the pre-pharmacy track with a minor in leadership studies, developed his research as part of his degree requirements. Under the guidance of Dr. Jinasena Hewage, Dean of the School of Applied Sciences, and Dr. Samanthika Hettiarachchi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physics, he designed a project that aligns with his academic interests.

The focus of Askins' research is on extracting phytochemicals from plants native to North Dakota. These compounds are important for plant immune responses and have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. His study aims to identify which species contain these chemicals and measure their production levels. He theorizes that plants adapted to North Dakota's harsh winters may have diverse chemical compositions.

“This project is important for North Dakota, as it explores native plants with potential pharmaceutical properties,” said Dr. Hettiarachchi. “It offers an opportunity to isolate and identify key compounds, benefiting the pharmaceutical industry.”

Askins noted that while his work might not directly lead to new medications, it could pave the way for future advancements in pharmaceuticals. “I won’t be discovering any new medications, but it’s the first step in the process,” he explained.

The research will start with cultivating local plant species in DSU's greenhouse before moving on to testing and analysis once they mature.

Expressing gratitude for the ND EPSCoR grant, Askins shared his enthusiasm about engaging in hands-on research that will enhance his understanding of pharmacology and support his career aspirations in pharmacy.
