WILLISTON, N.D. – Presented by Kim Weismann’s COMM 212 Interpersonal Communication classes, the 6th Annual Veterans Symposium will be held on the Williston State campus, in the Teton Lounge, on Monday, December 5.
The evening begins with a free meal, sponsored by the Williston State College Foundation, for veterans and active military personnel at 5:00 p.m. Presentations, which are open to the public, begin at 6:00 p.m.
Weismann, Professor of Communication at Williston State College, was first approached in 2016 by the Williams County Veterans Service Office to document veterans’ stories.
To date, over 150 stories have been collected from veterans who served in World War II through the present.
“This is the 6th year of collecting veterans’ stories. We still learn so much from each person and their service experiences”, said Weismann.
As of now, about twenty veterans’ stories will be told at this year’s evening event.
Students are tasked with finding veterans and interviewing them about their experiences. Students then draft and edit written reports of these stories which they then share at the symposium.
“We would like to continue this project next year as well. If anyone is interested in sharing their story, publicly or privately with one student, please reach out to me,” said Weismann.
While stories are not orally recorded, written versions are available at willistonoralhistory.blogspot.com.
If interested in telling your story or if you know someone whose story should be heard, please contact Weismann 701.774.4503 or kim.weismann@willistonstate.edu.
