Dickinson State University graduate Emma Miller is set to begin her teaching career this fall at Hope Christian Academy. Miller, who recently completed her studies at DSU, has long aspired to become an educator, inspired by her positive experiences as a student and early interest in learning.

Miller said she was drawn to Dickinson State University for its strong School of Education and its location. She also cited the affordability of the university as an important factor in her decision.

“My heart comes alive when I am with children,” Miller said. “I love watching kids grow and figuring out how to best support them. I enjoy planning lessons, teaching new concepts and reflecting on how I can be a better educator.”

Reflecting on her time at DSU, Miller emphasized the value of personalized attention from faculty members. She noted that instructors were invested in both academic achievement and personal development, frequently supporting students outside the classroom.

Miller credited much of her preparation to professors Darla Hoffmann and Laura Leiss. Hoffmann’s instruction in pedagogy gave Miller practical tools for effective teaching. “Her enthusiasm and depth of knowledge created a positive, productive space for me to learn and grow,” Miller said.

Leiss acted as a mentor during Miller’s student teaching experience, offering guidance that helped build confidence in applying educational methods in real classrooms. “All of these experiences were where I learned and grew the most,  I could put the methods and ideas I had been learning into tangible practice,” Miller said. “They also gave me confidence when I stepped into my student teaching experience. I believe that is the greatest strength of the School of Education at Dickinson State University.”

Miller will begin leading her own classroom as a full-time teacher at Hope Christian Academy starting this fall.
