Dickinson State University (DSU) has announced the creation of a new Bachelor of Science in Applied Communication and a certificate in Sports Production and Broadcasting. These programs aim to equip students with practical skills for careers in communication through hands-on learning and industry connections.

Central to these programs is DSU’s newly upgraded Digital Media Studio, which includes podcasting stations, a green screen room, and mobile video equipment. This technology will be incorporated into coursework, allowing students to work with industry-standard tools.

The new degree and certificate are expected to begin in Fall 2026 and are currently in the curriculum development stage. Students interested in these fields can enroll in DSU’s existing Bachelor of Science in Communication for foundational courses.

DSU has appointed two new faculty members to support these initiatives. Dr. CarrieLynn Reinhard joins with extensive academic experience, while Stefanie Aulner brings sports production expertise. Dr. Reinhard, who completed her Ph.D. at The Ohio State University, will focus on developing communication literacy within the program.

“I am excited to help the Applied Communications program get started," Reinhard stated. "I especially look forward to being able to help the Dickinson and Western Edge communities improve their communication skills."

Dr. Joan Aus, Dean of the School of Education, emphasized the innovative nature of these programs: “Students will not only study theory but will actively engage in communication practice through digital storytelling, sports media production, and emerging communication platforms.”

Dr. Holly Gruhlke noted DSU's dedication to providing career-ready programs that meet workforce needs: “With our investments in technology and talent, we are building programs that offer students access to transformative learning experiences right here in southwestern North Dakota.”
