Dickinson State University (DSU) has announced the appointment of Dr. Thomas Schwartz, Ph.D., as the new Head Coach of the Blue Hawk Cross Country team and Assistant Professor of Kinesiology. His tenure will begin on August 1, 2025.

Dr. Schwartz is known for his achievements in both competitive coaching and academic instruction. He has coached five national champions, several U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers, and numerous age-group world record holders. His credentials include the World Athletics Level 5 Elite Endurance Coach certification and certifications from USA Track & Field at Levels I, II, and III. He also serves as a USATF Instructor.

“Dr. Schwartz brings an unparalleled blend of elite coaching success and academic depth to our campus,” stated DSU President Scott Molander. “His presence strengthens our student-athlete experience and enhances our exercise science and kinesiology offerings.”

Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Dr. Holly Gruhlke commented on the appointment: “Dr. Schwartz’s appointment reflects our commitment to excellence across both academics and athletics.” She added that his ability to lead will benefit not only exercise science students but also the broader campus community.

In addition to his coaching background, Dr. Schwartz holds a Ph.D. in Health and Human Performance from Concordia University Chicago and a Master’s degree in Human Performance from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. He is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist with extensive teaching experience in related fields.

Dr. Schwartz co-authored "Build Your Running Body," an internationally recognized training guide, and is known for educational videos on distance training principles like Critical Velocity Training.

“I’m honored to join Dickinson State University as Head Cross Country and Track Distance Coach and Assistant Professor of Kinesiology," said Dr. Schwartz about his new role at DSU.

He expressed excitement about fostering a culture that emphasizes hard work, academic discipline, and character within the program.

Dr. Schwartz's dual role will commence before the fall semester begins, with plans for a campus meet-and-greet event forthcoming.
