Dickinson State University's International Programs office is a key resource for both international and domestic students, fostering global engagement on campus. The office focuses on admissions and immigration services, student support, and intercultural opportunities to help students adjust to life in a new country and connect with peers worldwide.

A significant responsibility of the office is guiding international students through the admissions and visa process, working closely with federal agencies such as U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of State. This process can be intimidating and costly for many students.

Once on campus, the office provides ongoing support to help students comply with visa regulations while assisting with everyday needs like academic concerns or obtaining a driver's license. "The International Programs office exists to make sure students have the support they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom,” said Ruse Kiser, Director of International Programs and Multicultural Affairs.

The office also creates cultural opportunities through initiatives like the International Club and study abroad experiences. In 2024, it helped organize a two-week educational trip to Japan for the DSU Agriculture Club.

Canada is currently the top country of origin for international students at DSU, followed by Nigeria. Students from 18 different countries are enrolled at DSU. Of approximately 40 international visa-holding students, around eight to ten participate in athletics.

Recruiting international students to rural North Dakota presents challenges as many come from urban areas unfamiliar with small-town life or climate differences. Other obstacles include language barriers, education system differences, lack of public transportation, financial strain due to currency fluctuations affecting tuition costs.

Despite these challenges, many international students show resilience that enriches DSU's learning environment. “Getting involved on campus is one of the best things international students can do,” Kiser added.

International Programs encourages all DSU students to engage across cultural lines for lasting academic, professional, and personal impact.
