As of today, Vision West ND will now be adding a Soldier Spotlight in the monthly newsletter to recognize and honor some of the brave individuals from this region.

The first individual we will be recognizing is Vision West ND Board Member, Retired Sergeant first class, and current city of Dickinson mayor, Scott J. Decker.

Military Branch: U.S. Army

Service Stations: Ft. Benning, Georgia, Camp Hovey, South Korea, & SW North Dakota Recruiting Station

Medals & Recognition Received: MSM, NDMSM, ARCOM (3), AAM (4), GCM (7), GWM, SASM, Order of Saint Maurice

Assignments and Unique Deployments:

"I was deployed to Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990-1991 and served with the 197th Infantry Brigade (separate). We were attached to the 24th Infantry Division and served as part of Gen. Schwarzkopf's "left hook" which brought a quick decisive end to the war. After the war I had the honor of traveling to the White House and playing Horseshoes with President Bush (pictured below).

My time in the Army and in the North Dakota National Guard also led to some very unique assignments. I was selected to represent 2/18th INF BN on their service rifle competition team where we won an 18th Airborne Corp. Championship, and an All-Army Championship. I served as the Assistant Operations Sergeant at the Infantry Officers Base Course (IOBC), and in 1995 while stationed in South Korea, I was a dismounted infantry squad leader, and Bradley Fighting Vehicle gunner.

When I returned to Ft. Benning in 1996, I was selected by TRADDOC Systems Manager-Soldier to be the Land Warrior and to test and represent the Army's newest equipment in front of Congress, the Pentagon, and foreign military representatives.

After my time in the Army was done, I returned to North Dakota and had the fortune of being selected as one of the state's first soldiers on the 81st WMD which is now the 81st CST. In April of 2000 I returned to active duty and was selected to be the commander and full-time recruiter for the Southwest Recruiting Station, located in Dickinson, ND. I served in that capacity until I retired in September of 2010."

Thank you, Scott Decker, for your service to this great nation.
