Sylvia Reese embarked on a journey to complete her bachelor’s degree more than fifty years after initially starting college. After high school, she began her studies but paused to focus on family life. Years later, with her children grown, Sylvia earned an associate degree in Early Childhood Education and worked in preschools.
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a move to North Dakota, where at 67, Sylvia decided to pursue her bachelor’s degree at Dickinson State University (DSU). She faced challenges adapting to new technology but received support from younger classmates. Balancing academics and grandmother duties was demanding, yet DSU faculty accommodated her needs.
Dr. Deborah Secord, Sylvia’s advisor and mentor, was pivotal in her journey. “She has been my cheerleader and has prodded me through this experience,” Sylvia noted. Dr. Secord remarked on Sylvia’s determination: “I invested a lot of time into her because I truly believe everyone deserves the opportunity to accomplish their dreams.”
A rewarding student teaching experience bolstered Sylvia’s confidence. Post-graduation, she aspires to work part-time as a teacher assistant. Her journey has inspired others, including her daughter encouraged by workplace peers to pursue a nursing degree.
“My daughter has been encouraged by her workplace to get her bachelor’s in nursing,” Sylvia said. “And I wanted her to know that she isn’t too old to do it.”
Sylvia Reese exemplifies that it’s never too late to invest in oneself and inspire future generations.
