Dickinson State University (DSU) marks its founding anniversary today, reflecting on its growth from a small teacher-training school to a significant educational institution in North Dakota and beyond.
The university began as Dickinson State Normal School on June 24, 1918. Classes were initially held at Dickinson High School under Superintendent Peter S. Berg, with the aim of addressing the need for qualified teachers in rural areas. At that time, fewer than 25% of teachers in western North Dakota were certified. Students paid for room and board, while tuition was free. The institution moved classes to the Elks Building until May Hall was completed in 1924.
In the 2024–2025 academic year, DSU made several notable achievements:
The university announced a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program set to launch in Fall 2026, aimed at enhancing the nursing workforce and student success.
In November 2024, DSU’s Blue Hawks hosted their first home playoff football game in two decades during the NAIA Football Championship Series. They secured a victory over Kansas Wesleyan with a score of 27-20.
A partnership formed with Williston State College in December 2024 enables students to complete bachelor’s degrees locally or online without relocating. This agreement focuses on fields such as business and criminal justice.
DSU’s Educator Preparation Program received perfect accreditation scores from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), highlighting its quality and effectiveness.
Jumoke Adekoye became DSU’s first National Champion in Women’s Wrestling history by winning her match 5-3. She also earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award at the National Tournament.
Scott Molander was named as DSU’s fourteenth president by the State Board of Higher Education. Molander is an alumnus of DSU and co-founder of Hat World Inc., bringing new leadership to the university.
